Bitwarden (https://bitwarden.com/) is one of the most trusted open source password managers for business. Bitwarden offers the easiest and safest way for teams and individuals to store and share sensitive data from any device. Bitwarden debuted in August 2016 with an initial release of mobile applications for iOS and Android, browser extensions for Chrome and Opera, and a web vault. The browser extension for Firefox was later launched in February 2017.

electricityMap is a live visualization of where your electricity comes from and how much CO2 was emitted to produce it. The visualization is built in D3.js and mapbox GL. The back-end parsers are written in python. The project is maintained by Tomorrow(https://www.tmrow.com/). You can view the project on their website (https://www.electricitymap.org/map) or download the app.

fastai is a deep learning library which provides users with high-level components that can quickly and easily provide state-of-the-art results in standard deep learning domains, and provides researchers with low-level components that can be mixed and matched to build new approaches. It aims to provide both functionality without compromising ease of use, flexibility or performance. This is achieved through a carefully planned architecture, which expresses common patterns of many deep learning and data processing techniques.

Figure: Firefox Logo Mozilla Firefox is a free and open-source browser that has revolutionized the internet by challenging Microsoft Internet Explorer’s iron grip on the web browser market. Firefox has continued to challenge the status quo by putting the privacy and security of its users first through a wide community of volunteers, coordinated by the Mozilla Corporation.

Inkscape is a Free and open source vector graphics editor for GNU/Linux, Windows and MacOS X. It offers a rich set of features and is widely used for both artistic and technical illustrations such as cartoons, clip art, logos, typography, diagramming and flowcharting. It uses vector graphics to allow for sharp printouts and renderings at unlimited resolution and is not bound to a fixed number of pixels like raster graphics. Inkscape uses the standardized SVG file format as its main format, which is supported by many other applications including web browsers.

IntelliJ IDEA is an Java IDE designed to maximize developer productivity offering deep intelligence by indexing the source code; out-of-the-box experience by supporting mission-critical tools without any plugins; smart code completion by analyzing the code context; framework-specific assistance even for languages other than Java; productivity boosters by automating tedious tasks; developer ergonomics by minimizing workflow interruptions; unobtrusive intelligence by offering a wide range of tools increasing productivity outside the editor as well.

Jitsi Meet is an open-source (Apache) WebRTC JavaScript application that uses Jitsi Videobridge to provide high quality, secure and scalable video conferences. Jitsi Meet in action can be seen at here at the session #482 of the VoIP Users Conference. The Jitsi Meet client runs in your browser, without installing anything else on your computer. You can try it out at https://meet.jit.si. Jitsi Meet allows very efficient collaboration. Users can stream their desktop or only some windows.

Kafka is an open-source distributed event streaming platform. It allows information streams to be processed to give more refined output and monitoring possibilities. Scalability is an important feature of Kafka, making this a powerful tool for large companies, such as LinkedIn (where it originated), AirBnB and many more. In this blog we take a look at the development of Kafka and its infrastructure. Focusing on the changes that happened from 2017 until now, based on an earlier report from desosa.

Figure: KiCad logo KiCad is an open source software suite, written in C++, for drawing schematics and PCBs (printed circuit board). KiCad was created by Jean-Pierre Charras in 1992. KiCad has several interesting features like an autorouter, DRC check, maximum of 32 layers and new parts are easy to add. In 2013 CERN started making large contributions which helped KiCad become comparable with other electronic design programs.

Figure: Kubernetes logo Kubernetes is a portable, extensible, open-source platform for managing containerized workloads and services, that facilitates both declarative configuration and automation. 1 Kubernetes is built upon a decade and a half of experience at Google, with the main goal of distributing and managing workload across containers and making rapid development and deployment possible. This is done by creating multiple container nodes which run the same process, Kubernetes is the orchestrator which benefits the application because it improves up-time and gives an efficient roll-out schedule for any update.

libGDX is a free, open source cross-platform Java game development framework based on OpenGL. As a main principle this framework provides developers the opportunity for fast prototyping and iterations when working on a video game given its cross-platform nature. libGDX realizes these benefits for the developer by offering a single API, which targets many different platforms. Having a single code base also simplifies maintenance.

Figure: matplotlib logo Matplotlib aims to enable users to create customizable visualizations through own components or third parties, all in a few lines of Python code. Matplotlib was created by John Hunter in 2002, intitially to show figures like MatLab could. The public started recognizing this package as the go-to package because it was also used by the Space Telescope Science Institute, and thereby gained more popularity 1.

The NetworkX project, pronounced as Network “X”, is a python library for creating, manipulating, and studying the structure, dynamics and functions of complex networks. The primary aim of the project is to be “the reference library for network science algorithms in Python”. As such, NetworkX aims to provide tools to study structure and dynamics of social, biological and infrastructure networks while providing interfaces and graphical implementations to be used in other applications.

Figure: The logo of NV Access, the creators of NVDA. NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access) is a free and open source screen reader application for the Windows OS. It is developed by NV Access, a non-profit organization which was established in 2007 by two blind childhood friends, in order to develop and support free and open source software for visually impaired individuals. The founders of NV Access began developing NVDA when they realized that most of the available screenreader programs were prohibitively expensive, costing up to thousands of dollars.

Figure: OBS logo Open Broadcater Software (OBS) studio is a free and open-source cross platform streaming and recording program. OBS provides real-time source and device capture, scene composition, encoding, recording, and broadcasting. OBS was first developed by Hugh “Jim” Bailey as a small tool to record video game. Then more and more contributors volunteer to work on this project since it was released on github in 2013.

Figure: Odoo logo Odoo is a web-based software platform that provides a large set of different applications for business management. For example, Odoo can be used for website building, warehouse management, project management, and much more. Odoo also provides enterprise versions of their software with additional features that are proprietary. Odoo is mainly maintained by employees that work for Odoo. Furthermore, the main languages used in the project are Python and JavaScript.

Due to the large variety in devices, protocols and communcation standards it can be difficult to combine Smart Home products to provide a seamless experience. In order to do this Kai Kreuzer started to develop openHAB in 2010. OpenHAB is the opensource home automation bus with many contributors and many different repositories. It allows the user to combine all available products into a single system. Bindings allow different products to be communicated with through a standardized interface.

Our logo includes team logo and official logo for PaddleOCR PaddleOCR is an open-source OCR tool based on PaddlePaddle algorithm developed by company Baidu from China. It aims to create multilingual, awesome, leading, and practical OCR tools that help users train better models and apply them into practice. Compared with other OCR tools, PaddleOCR has the feature of ultra-lightweight and pre-trained models, which is suitable for local offline deployment and being embedded in IoT devices.

So, what is pip? pip is a package manager for Python. That means it’s a tool that allows you to install and manage additional libraries and dependencies that are not distributed as part of the standard library. Package management is so important that pip has been included with the Python installer since versions 3.4 for Python 3 and 2.7.9 for Python 2, and it’s used by many Python projects, which makes it an essential tool for every developer that uses Python.

RustPython can be embedded into Rust programs to use Python as a scripting language for your application, or it can be compiled to WebAssembly in order to run Python in the browser. RustPython is free and open-source under the MIT license.

Spark is the most widely used big data processing framework that enables developers to focus on their data-processing logic without struggling with any other cluster problems. A large amount of data is generated on Internet every second. Processing such an amount of information is usually considered impossible for a single computer because of memory limitation and bad real-time performance. To solve this problem, exploiting the power of the computer cluster becomes the most feasible solution.

Stellar is an open network for storing and moving money around the world using blockchain technology. Compared to other cryptocurrency networks, Stellar distinguishes itself by focusing on low transaction fees and easy access in third world countries. Whilst Stellar is the name of both the crypto network and the accompanying protocol, Lumens are the tokens that are supplied by the same foundation that created Stellar. (Stellar) Lumens are built on top of the Stellar protocol.

Eclipse Theia is an extensible framework to develop full-fledged multi-language Cloud & Desktop IDE-like products with state-of-the-art web technologies, implemented in TypeScript. It emphasizes extensibility and vendor neutrality. Theia was developed by TypeFox and Ericsson, with additional contributions from Red Hat, IBM, Google, Arm Holdings and other contributors. It was first launched in March 2017. Since May 2018, Theia has been under the umbrella of the Eclipse Foundation. The aim of Eclipse Theia is to:

Analyze incoming telemetry and trigger complex event processing.

With VS Code, Microsoft aims to provide users with a streamlined code editor that supports debugging, code execution and version control. In that sense it is more limited than another product in Microsoft’s line of confusing naming conventions: Visual Studio IDE. This doesn’t mean however, that VS Code is inferior to other well established IDE’s.

The ability to freely share and obtain information is important. The internet is the most viable way to share data. Because of this reason, wikis exist. Wikis are knowledge bases (using internal link structures) that can be easily edited online, not only by their creators but by (generally) every individual that wants to collaborate.
